A Full Summer Day in My Life in Portugal
Life in Portugal has its own rhythm — a mix of sunshine, slow living, and everyday routines that somehow feel special. In today’s post, I’ll take you through a full summer day in my life here on Madeira Island. From morning workouts and coffee rituals with Lara, to cooking, scooter rides, and peaceful moments at the park, this is what my version of slow island living looks like.
Morning Routine: Gym & Coffee with Lara
I’ve recently started going to the gym, so my mornings begin with movement. Getting my workout done first thing makes me feel accomplished and leaves the rest of the day open to enjoy life.
While Joen and Lara were still snoozing, I headed out for a session. By the time I returned home, I was full of energy and ready for coffee.
Coffee in the morning is more than just a drink — it’s a ritual. And since Lara had just woken up, she joined me on the balcony for our little moment together. She wasn’t in the snuggliest mood, but still kept me company while I tidied up the space.
Midday: Lara’s Grooming & Cooking Lunch
After coffee, it was time for Lara’s grooming appointment. She doesn’t exactly love the process, but she adores the sweet girl who takes care of her, so that makes things easier. On the drive over, Lara sat in her little driving bag — safe, cozy, and honestly looking adorable. By the time we got close, she already knew what was coming.
While she was at the groomer, I headed back home to prepare lunch. Joen and I aren’t eating the same meals right now since I’m on a diet. For him, I cooked a simple but flavorful veggie fried rice with ghee, seeds, and a dollop of plant-based yogurt for protein. For myself, I kept it light with cucumber and a tuna salad made from canned tuna and Greek yogurt.
Eating differently might sound a little complicated, but it works for us. Plus, I’ve been practicing mindful eating — no distractions, just me and my food. It really helps me feel more satisfied and present.
Afternoon: Laundry, Work & Picking Up Lara
After lunch, it was time for some chores. Laundry is never-ending in our house — somehow we always end up with three loads a week. Still, I’m grateful for our washing machine. One small joy I love is making the bed later in the day; letting it “steam off” first is actually healthier, and climbing into a neatly made bed at night feels like a little everyday luxury.
I caught up on some work during the hot hours of the afternoon. In summer, I often save my deep work for later in the day, so I can enjoy the warmth outside while it lasts.
Soon after, I got the call that Lara was ready to be picked up. I couldn’t wait — and she looked absolutely flawless when I saw her. The groomer really is a genius when it comes to poodles. Lara seemed happy and refreshed, and of course, she earned herself an extra “good-girl” snack once we got home.
Evening: Scooter Ride & Summer Gratefulness
Once Joen wrapped up work, we decided to make the most of the warm evening and take the scooter out. Riding through Madeira’s winding roads always reminds me how blessed I am to live here. Joen actually gifted me the scooter for my 30th birthday — back when I didn’t even have a license yet. Now, driving it myself feels like pure freedom.
Lara loves coming along in her little kangaroo bag, ears flapping in the wind, as we head off to new spots. Our destination today was Garajau, home to one of the most stunning beaches on the island and the famous Cristo Rei statue. The scenery was breathtaking — the dramatic coastline, crystal-blue waters, and just enough breeze to keep the heat at bay.
After soaking it all in, we headed back toward the city and made one last stop at Santa Catarina Park. This is Lara’s absolute favorite place. She could chase her ball endlessly across the grass, and watching her and Joen so happy together filled me with gratitude. These are the small, everyday moments that mean the most to me.
Closing Reflections
As the day wound down, we headed back home for dinner and a little more work before bedtime. It wasn’t a special occasion or an extraordinary adventure — just a full summer day in my life here in Portugal. But that’s exactly what I love about living on Madeira Island: the beauty lies in the ordinary.
From coffee rituals with Lara, to simple home-cooked meals, scooter rides, and evenings at the park, it’s these little moments that bring me the most joy. Living here has taught me to be more present, to savor the sunshine, and to feel grateful for all the small things that make life meaningful.
